In a recent article for the Guardian website, Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, expressed his views on global warming. It seems that the archbish. reckons that the traditional values of his religion can be helpful in dealing with this issue. I commented on his post, and I am delighted to say that two days later, my comment is the “most recommended” by fellow Guardian readers. So with due and appropriate immodesty, I am reposting my comment here, in the hope that readers on this site will rip it to shreds, and thereby save me from the sin of pride.

It’s hard to conceive of any thinking more useless in dealing with current issues than religious thinking, which elevates humankind to the centre of the universe by projecting its imaginary god into ownership of everything, and thereby renders the universe just and meaningful. In this worldview, life is a game rather than a struggle, and we succeed by finding out the rules from a magic book, and if we are “good”, then we will not die. This kind of nonsense allows christians to rape the earth and slaughter its (human and other) inhabitants, as long as they are told it’s ok by people like the good archbishop. Evidence? Take a look at the most “christian” country on earth, that superconsuming supermilitaristic superpower across the atlantic. Super, eh?

No, Dr W., it’s not traditional values we need, it’s radical humility, acceptance of our complete dependence on the ecology of which we are a part, and an understanding that we will die as a species as surely as we die as individuals unless we cooperate with each other to find new ways to live modestly and harmoniously on our beautiful planet, floating though cold implacable hostile loveless pointless empty space.

“Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury” I wonder of which traditional Catholic values he’s referring to? Genocide? Burning of innocent people? Political manipulation or child molestation? Gotta love them traditional catholic values-that’ll save the ol’ planet right up.
“radical humility” from an xtian faith? HA! These so called “Lords of Creation” wont bow to being a “piece” of the ecological world.. after all they are Humans with thumbs, and computers and cars. Not monkeys in trees or dogs on leashes. And anything they do they’re imaginary santa clause who rewards people for being good will magicly fix.
The only problem I see is way to many of them, and not enough of you.

Good call.

@Troy McClure: Williams isn’t a catholic, he’s an anglican, as if that makes much difference. ;-)

“This kind of nonsense allows christians to rape the earth and slaughter its (human and other) inhabitants, as long as they are told it’s ok by people like the good archbishop.”

I don’t know which Churches you have visited, but every one I have been to has taught that murder (slaughter) is wrong. I have never come across anyone in the large number of churches I have visited teach any deviance of this.

“Take a look at the most “christian” country on earth, that superconsuming supermilitaristic superpower across the atlantic. Super, eh?”

And by the same logic, China, a country in which you are not allowed to belong to ANY religion and become a leading member of the communist party therefore represents atheists and humanists? China’s cultural revolution and their poor record of acting upon climate change is representative of atheists around the world? Of course not! An awful argument that anyone with half a brain should be able to see through. Whilst I am a Christian, I do (usually!) respect your ability to debate in a sensible manner, making appropriate arguments. That, however, is not the case in regards to this particular argument.

christians are against murder? What about the death penalty (in the US of course)? What about the flock of army chaplains bleating at their stupid squaddies across the world? What about mass murder as an element of foreign policy? Particularly loved by christians that last one, and jews of course.
China isn’t in any way representative of atheism or humanism! What do you think communism is but a religion? Who was mao but a shit messiah?
Your cult relies on your continuing to be a sheep. But at least you get to live for ever, eh?
BAAAAAAAAA!!!!

So because a christian does something, again, by your logic, it makes it the ‘christian thing to do.’

In the same way, because atheists murder others every day, every atheist believes murder is ok? Of course not! An equally weak argument! The death penalty is quite clearly unbiblical - the bible teaches murder is wrong and to forgive others again and again. Just because some fundies in the US have warped theology, it does not, and should not reflect poorly upon the rest of us.

Communism is a religion? Bold claim. One thing is for certain, they do not believe in any deity, but I will not get into a debate about if communism is a religion or not. My point however, still stands. You should not judge Christians based upon the actions of the USA and George Bush in the same way I do not judge Atheists based upon one single individual, institution or country. It is narrow minded to do anything of the sort. The vast majority of Christians in the rest of the world do not agree with his past actions.

ok, so let me get this right, GOD is alowed to kill who he wants, can even instigate a father to kill his own son. can burn a whole city then turn a poor woman to dust when all she was doing was looking back at everyone she knew and loved !
so, the bible preaches that you are not alowwed to kill, true, unless its god telling you to kill for him! VERY SADISTIC god is, you hold the book as the truth of your religion, ACCEPT WHAT IT SAYS!!! A.K.A GENisis 3:16
Unto the woman He said: ‘I will greatly multiply thy pain and thy travail; in pain thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.’
VERY SEXIST GOD TOO!! LOL!

P.S PJ, i realy think you need to read your BOOK, slowly, and realy read it for what it is,
a book of control. IF YOU DONT AGREE WITH WHAT IT SAYS, dont dare pick and choose your passages like most, TAKE IT IN ITS ENTIRETY or dont take it at all.
