“We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.”

As a child I was raised into Catholicism, attended a catholic school, was baptized, took my Holy Communion and was later confirmed into the church. The priests and monks were good people. They cared deeply about both the children and their own faith. Although I didn’t believe what I was being taught, I never really had any reason to criticize or question them. If something makes you happy then what’s the problem?

I recently had a discussion with a good friend of mine about faith, god and religion. It was this conversation that moved me to write this blog. We discussed my beliefs and his belief in a god.

Throughout the discussion I kept thinking back to my belief, “If something makes you happy then what’s the problem?” That’s when it struck me and that’s when I decided that perhaps I should start this blog.

The answer to the question is simple. There is no problem unless the thing making you happy is making someone else unhappy. I’ve always been very liberal. I don’t wish to control anything that anyone else wishes to do unless it has a negative effect on me, my community or society as a whole.

Religion and faith, no matter how moderate, are creating a base upon which fundamentalism and militancy are thriving. We see every day the negative effects of religion on the world. We don’t even need to look at the historical damage that religion has done. Ignore the history for just one moment. Just look at what’s happening today.

I don’t believe my friend is truly religious or that he really believes in god. I’m sure he’ll disagree but I think he simply wants to believe in something. It’s from this that his arguments stem.

I hope that this blog can make people look at religion rationally. To make people question what they’ve been taught whilst at the same time, allow me to vent some of my own frustrations.

If you believe in god I want to change your mind. I think you are as wrong as you believe those who worship Zeus to be. Will I change your mind? Possibly not. But I believe that if you look at this topic rationally then you’ll have no choice but to at least question your faith. From this anything is possible.
